JOBLIFT ANALYSES MORE THAN NINE MILLION JOB VACANCIES ADVERTISED IN THE PAST YEAR STUDYING TOP SECTORS, CITIES AND TYPES OF EMPLOYMENT
Berlin/Hamburg, 15th December 2017 – In a yearly round-up, job meta-search engine Joblift has analysed the 9,410,153 job advertisements that have been published from 1st January 2017 to the present day in the United Kingdom. Key findings from the analysis show that vacancy growth has been slow as a whole and London has seen a decline in job offers this year. Additionally, Healthcare has been the most significant sector in terms of both the number of vacancies and the average monthly growth in the UK’s job market.
HEALTHCARE HAS DOMINATED THE UK JOB MARKET, BUT OVERALL GROWTH HAS LAGGED BEHIND GERMANY
According to Joblift, the UK job market has seen an average monthly increase of just 0.8% since January 2017. In comparison, Britain’s European neighbour Germany has experienced a growth of 1.3% each month on average. In terms of the UK’s strongest industry in 2017, Healthcare takes the top spot with substantial dominance. The sector has issued 11.8% of all job postings in the UK and has grown by 1.9% on average monthly. This was followed by the Sales and Trading sector (10.8% of all vacancies, 0.3% growth) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT, 10.3% of the job market, 1.2% growth).
DECLINE IN JOB VACANCIES IN THE UK’S TOP CITIES WITH ONLY EDINBURGH SHOWING GROWTH
Interestingly, vacancies in the UK’s top three cities (in terms of quantity of job vacancies), London, Manchester, and Birmingham have all seen declines in the past year. While London has been home to 19.1% of all job vacancies this year, the job market in the capital has stalled, with a decline of 0.1% monthly on average. Similarly, Manchester has decreased by 0.3% and Birmingham has seen an average decline of 1.5 monthly. In fact, when looking at the UK’s top ten cities in 2017, only Edinburgh – which ranked in seventh place for the number of job vacancies posted – has seen an average monthly increase, and even then only 0.3% each month.
ALDI WAS THE UK’S TOP EMPLOYER ADVERTISING OVER HALF A MILLION POSITIONS THIS YEAR, BUT NURSES WERE THE MOST IN-DEMAND PROFESSIONALS
Given Healthcare’s dominance in 2017’s job market, it is unsurprising to see that the NHS ranked in second place in terms of top employers this year. The National Health Service has directly advertised around 40,000 jobs this year, placing the organisation just behind Aldi, which took the top spot as the UK’s largest employer (around 55,000 positions advertised this year). Supermarket chain Tesco ranked in third place with just over 25,000 vacancies posted in 2017. Nurses topped the list as the most in-demand profession of 2017 with around 200,000 positions advertised and an average monthly increase of 1.9%. Sales Managers came in second place (173,894 vacancies) but have declined by 1.1% on average, and Customer Service personnel rounded off the top three (167,492 postings) with an average increase of 1.1%.
APPRENTICESHIPS INCREASED ON AVERAGE AND ALMOST A SIXTH OF ALL VACANCIES REQUESTED VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
In terms of contract types, permanent positions continued to dominate, accounting for 78.4% of all vacancies posted since last January. However, these contracts have actually seen an average monthly decrease of 0.6% this year. Alternatively, while temporary contracts made up 13.4% of the job market they have increased by 4.7% on average monthly. Apprenticeships have also seen a significant rise of 3.7%, but these contracts made up just 1.7% of all vacancies. Additionally, with regard to the level of required education, vocational qualifications were the most in-demand with 15.4% of all postings requesting this. Bachelor’s Degrees were asked for in 13.4% of job ads, and GCSE’s (or equivalent) were demanded in 13.1% postings since last January.
