JOBLIFT ANALYSES THE INCREASE IN ENGLISH SPEAKING JOBS IN EUROPEAN CAPITALS SINCE THE BREXIT VOTE

2nd March 2018 – When Britain voted to leave the European Union on 23rd June 2016, European capitals set about trying to offer an attractive alternative to London and encourage British talent to relocate. To quantify the efforts of these cities, job search engine Joblift has analysed the increase in the number of English speaking jobs in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam since 23rd June 2016. Additionally, Joblift has looked into the type of talent these cities are targeting and has noted that in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam, young, university-qualified people are the most in-demand.

ENGLISH SPEAKING VACANCIES HAVE INCREASED MORE THAN THE WHOLE JOB MARKET IN BERLIN, PARIS AND AMSTERDAM

According to Joblift, all three cities have seen a significant increase in the number of English speaking jobs since the Brexit vote. English speaking vacancies in Berlin – the city topped as London’s primary competitor – have increased by 3% each month on average (compared to a 2% increase in Berlin’s job market as whole), with around 10,055 positions being advertised since 23rd June 2016. Paris has seen the greatest increase where 6,510 English speaking vacancies have been posted since the referendum, increasing by 4% on average monthly – four times more than the 1% average monthly increase seen in the job market in Paris as a whole. Around 12,924 English speaking vacancies have been posted in Amsterdam since 23rd June 2016. These positions have increased by 3% on average each month, compared to a 1% average monthly increase in Amsterdam’s job market as a whole.

ENGLISH SPEAKING JOBS IN BERLIN TAKE ALMOST TWO WEEKS LONGER TO FILL THAN THEIR GERMAN LANGUAGE COUNTERPARTS

However, despite the increase in vacancies for English speakers, it seems that companies in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam have found these positions hard to fill, suggesting the supply may be outweighing the demand. English speaking vacancies took 48 days on average to fill in Berlin, 13 days longer than the city’s average. Likewise, in Amsterdam, these vacancies were active online for 52 days, six days longer than the average. In Paris the gap was less substantial; while English speaking vacancies took 43 days to fill, positions in the city’s whole job market took 41 days.

INTERNS ARE MOST REQUESTED IN EVERY CITY, WITH BERLIN FOCUSING ON TECH AND PARIS CENTERED ON SALES

In all three cities, interns were the most requested position when it came to English speaking vacancies since the Brexit vote. This suggests that companies in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam are targeting young British professionals who might be tempted to move. Interestingly, in Berlin, interns are followed by web developers and software programmers, emphasising the strong tech scene in the German capital. On the other hand, in Paris the emphasis is on sales. Commercial development managers are the second most requested position and sales managers round off the top three. The results follow less of a pattern in Amsterdam where customer service agents rank in second place and account managers come in third.

HIGHLY EDUCATED PROFESSIONALS ONLY; OVER 90% OF VACANCIES IN BERLIN, PARIS AND AMSTERDAM COLLECTIVELY ASK FOR UNIVERSITY EDUCATED CANDIDATES

Furthermore, companies in these cities were focused almost exclusively on highly educated expatriates. A staggering 94% of the English speaking vacancies posted in Berlin since 23rd June 2016 required candidates to hold a university degree. This result was nearly mirrored in Paris, where nine in every ten vacancies requested university educated candidates. Following closely, 88% of relevant vacancies in Amsterdam were aimed at candidates who held a university degree (or equivalent). Also, according to Joblift’s results, the requests for highly educated professionals has increased substantially. In Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam there has been a 3%, 6% and 4% monthly increase (respectively) in the number of vacancies asking for a university degree or equivalent.
