JOBLIFT ANALYSES THE UK’S TEACHING JOB MARKET

Berlin/Hamburg, 31st August 2017 – Teacher shortages in the UK have been widely publicised in recent years and numerous Members of Parliament have called for a strategy to cope with rapidly rising numbers of pupils and the resulting demand for teachers. With this as a focus, job meta-search engine Joblift has analysed the UK’s teaching job market over the last 12 months to highlight the change in contracts from full-time to shift work and job sharing.

VACANCIES HAVE INCREASED BY 1.5 TIMES THE UK AVERAGE WITH PHYSICS TEACHERS BEING THE MOST IN DEMAND

According to Joblift, 271,170 teaching jobs have been posted in the UK in the last 12 months, with these positions increasing by around 3% every month. In context, the whole UK market has increased by 2% monthly on average, meaning teaching vacancies have increased by 1.5 times the UK average. There has been much discussion that teaching vacancies have becoming increasingly more difficult to fill, which can be confirmed by the statistics that teaching positions stay active online for an average of 17 days before being filled – three days more than the UK average of 14 days. Joblift’s studies show that Physics teachers are the most in-demand, subject-wise, accounting for 8% of all teaching vacancies posted since August 2016. Mathematics and English teachers follow closely with each subject speciality making up 7% of all teaching vacancies. These statistics show that the need for Physics and Mathematics teachers remains high despite the government relaxing immigration restrictions to combat this labour gap last January. Interestingly, vacancies for Physics and Mathematics teachers have both decreased by an average of 5% monthly each since last January, suggesting that the restriction relaxation has had a positive effect.

WHILST PERMANENT CONTRACTS CONTINUE TO DOMINATE IN TERMS OF QUANTITY, TEMPORARY AND JOB SHARE ROLES HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLE THE GROWTH RATE

Joblift’s studies also show that there has been a significant shift towards more flexible working patterns when it comes to teaching vacancies in the past 12 months. Although permanent contracts still dominate, making up 73% of all vacancies, temporary contracts (23% of vacancies) have experienced 2.5 times the growth, with an average monthly increase of 5% (compared to 2% growth in permanent contracts). In addition, although teaching positions advertising shift work made up just 3% of all vacancies, these roles have increased by an average of 4% monthly compared to the 1% average monthly increase experienced in regular working hour vacancies. Furthermore, around 2,611 teaching positions posted in the past year have been advertised with the option to job share. Whilst these account for only 1% of all teaching positions, job share vacancies have seen a huge average monthly increase of 9%, three times more than the teaching average.
