Office Managers have the vital task of ensuring that the office runs smoothly and is maintained to a high standard. In this role you will be tasked with managing personnel, databases of information and often will be responsible for many HR tasks. Office Managers work closely with Office Administrators, and will benefit from prior experience in an office and sales environment, managing systems and coordinating tasks among personnel. Many Office Managers have a background as a Secretary or Administrative Assistant, where they developed their management and organisational skills. A background with accounting or bookkeeping will also be an asset for a job as an Office Manager.

Because the Office Manager at times must wear many hats, flexibility and assertiveness are valuable qualities. To succeed as an Office Manager you must be extremely organised and be able to prioritise large workloads effectively. You also need to have excellent communication skills due to dealing with a variety of different staff members and external clients. You need to have great computer skills, be able to work accurately and have brilliant teamwork skills. The skills required for this role are transferable, and tasks required varies largely from company to company. However, a high degree of flexibility and confidence will assist you in any workplace environment.
